Law Enforcement Tourch Run Campain

The mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run in partnership with our communities is to support Special Olympics programs through raising funds and awareness.  Special Olympics is an organization that provides year-round sport training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.  The members of the Medical Lake Police Department are inspired by the unfaltering persistence, courage, and spirit of our local athletes; therefore we are dedicated to the Special Olympics mission, to help those reach their full potential by focusing on their abilities, not their disabilities.

Fundraising Efforts of the Medical Lake Police Department The Medical Lake Police Department has coordinated several fundraising events throughout the years in support of Special Olympics Washington and our local athletes.   These fundraising attempts included a Silent Auction, Benefit Raffle, and a Fun Run.  With the help of law enforcement personnel from the surrounding agencies we were able to coordinate and participate in numerous state-wide fundraisers such as Tip-A-Cop in partnership with Red Robin, and Cops On Top of Doughnut Shops in partnership with Krispy Kreme.  Although, waiting tables and spending our days on top of roofs soliciting donations was fun we felt we wanted to take on a much bigger task.  In our second year of endorsing this great cause we hosted our first annual Polar Bear Plunge, a very unique fundraising event, in which participants “taking the plunge” collect pledges, in exchange for jumping into the icy waters of Medical Lake in the middle of winter.

Year of 2006- 2006 marks the first year that the Medical Lake Police Department began supporting Special Olympics Washington.  Ending the year on a high note, after many fundraising events, brought the total money raised over $6,000 for the cause.  These activity in the surrounding area’s also stirred up several media outlets, giving the athletes the recognition that they so deserve.

Year of 2007- The 2007 year of fundraising came to a close this October, with some much needed assistance from the Airway Heights Police Department.  We are exceedingly proud to announce that we were able to raise a total of $15,384.34!

Year of 2008- The Medical Lake Police Department is excited to begin a new year of possibilities by helping to raise funds and awareness for the local athletes of S.O.W.A.  This year will mark the first “official” year of partnership between our agency and the Airway Heights Police Department.

Comments from the Police Department - “Our agency would like to take this moment to extend a heartfelt thank you to the citizens of Medical Lake and neighboring communities for their generosity, participation and commitment to the local athletes of Special Olympics Washington.  This success was an outstanding community effort.  We are honored to show our support for Special Olympics Washington through our fundraising events, the money raised will help continue to provide high-quality programming at no cost to Special Olympics athletes”.   Jennifer Willoughby, Administrative Assistant
